Evidently a Growing Field

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 30th, 2008

I just stumbled upon this. Not sure what to make of it but it’s good to hear that HR is a growing field.
Overall HR employment is projected to grow by 17 percent between 2006 and 2016, estimating 1,015,000 jobs in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Plus, as the need for good [...]

If You Can’t Say Anything Nice…

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 30th, 2008

According to Philly.com (not CA, I know), a former Best Buy Manager is suing the company for preventing him from obtaining gainful employment.
Stung by a scathing job reference, a South Jersey man filed a federal lawsuit last week, claiming that Best Buy, his former employer, blackballed him.
Michael Oliveri, 47, said it was impossible [...]

JobDud

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 29th, 2008

Thanks to my wonderful husband for sending me this link.
JobDud is essentially a new place for disgruntled employees to grunt. It’s also a place that aggregates job postings from places like Monster, LinkedIn and from companies’ respective career center sites.
Interesting concept. I’ll be definitely keeping an eye on this one.

Well…Not All Your Rights Anyway

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 29th, 2008

A California Appellate Court determined that a broad separation release of claims does not include a release of rights under USERRA.
A good discussion of the case can be found here and here.
It’s interesting that both discussions go on to suggest that counsel be contacted when drafting separation agreements. Now being that both sites are crafted [...]

Don’t Wanna

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 28th, 2008

This has nothing to do with HR, although this just may remind you of a stubborn employee or two.

I just keep watching this over and over. I’m just in awe.

Interesting Survey

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 22nd, 2008

I received this email today from Erik Samdahl, the Director of The Institute for Corporate Productivity.
…I wanted to inform you of new study results that just went out today regarding anti-discrimination policies. The study, conducted by i4cp, found that most companies have formal anti-discrimination policies in place, but communicate these policies poorly [...]

DFEH Online

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 20th, 2008

From D. Gregory Valenza at Shaw Valenza:
The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing has implemented a new, online system for beginning the process of filing discrimination charges. Read the press release here. The online system actually is a way to set up an appointment for intake. Previously, employees had to scheduled those appointments over [...]

Not So Yahoo

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 20th, 2008

According to Silicon Alley Insider, 1,500 - 2,000 layoffs/job eliminations may be imminent at Yahoo.
What frankly shocks me, is not necessarily the layoffs, but the fact that such confidential information has become public. How did Silicon Alley Insider get this information?
Information regarding layoffs is usually communicated internally on a “need [...]

Nelson v. NASA

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 14th, 2008

On Friday, January 11, the Ninth Circuit ordered the District Court to grant preliminary injunctive relief to a group of “low risk” administrative and laboratory employees who were subjected to what they considered to be an unconstitutional requirement of invasive background checks.
The employees worked for the the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a combined [...]

Parking Fines = Living Wage?

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 11th, 2008

This is an interesting one. A San Francisco citizen working off his parking fines through Project 20 is upset because the $6 in credit earned does not meet the city’s minimum wage requirements. And of course, the restaurant business has to weigh in on it.
Considering that he owes over $1800 in [...]

NLRB vs. Friendly Cab Company

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 8th, 2008

More union stuff. And Bush is still President?
The 9th Circuit determined today that the drivers for the Friendly Cab Company in Oakland are considered to be employees, rather than the independent contractors that Friendly considered them to be.
With this decision, the Court also determined that Friendly violated the tenets of the NLRB [...]

Union vs. Mall

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 8th, 2008

On December 24, 2007, the California Supreme Court determined (by a very small margin) that mall management violated State Free Speech rights in prohibiting union members from handing out flyers to shoppers as they entered the mall.
Jackson Lewis has a great analysis of the situation. And particularly good advice for employers:
In light [...]

Bill’s Last Day at Work

This is pretty funny. It’s good to know that Bill Gates has a sense of humor about himself ala The Office. [via Laughing Squid]

The Magic Eight Ball - Fisher & Phillips

Posted by Lori Dorn on January 7th, 2008

I found this to be very entertaining (and at times a little ominous). The most encouraging, however, was this one:
Will the Supreme Court Continue to be Kind to Employers?
Magic 8-Ball Says: “It is Most Likely so”
Expect 2008 to see the continuation of a several year trend which has seen the Supreme Court rule in [...]
