Hiring Friends and Other Entrepreneurial Errors
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 26th, 2008My dear friend Ted who is the co-founder of two of my favorites sites ever, Dogster and Catster pointed the way to this article which enumerates the mistakes made as an entrepreneur.
The particular mistake that stuck out to most to me was #2 “I Hired My Friends”.
Per the LendingClub.com:
Do not [...]
Cat House on the Kings
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 25th, 2008My husband Scott wrote about this on his blog, but the subject matter is so amazing that I had to copy from him. And quote him for that matter.
From Laughing Squid:
The Cat House on the Kings, is no-cage, no-kill, lifetime cat sanctuary and adoption center run by Lynea Lattanzia in Parlier, California. There are [...]
Tentative Settlement in OC Day Labor Case
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 20th, 2008In 2007, day laborers in Orange County were told that they couldn’t stand on a corner in Lake Forest to look for work. The Sheriff’s Deputies involved stated that they informed the laborers that they had received complaints from neighbors regarding pollution and that the men could not stand on the sidewalk when seeking work [...]
Avila v. Continental Airlines
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 19th, 2008In this case, the Court of Appeals ruled that an it is an employers duty to determine whether or not an employee’s absence can qualify him/her for protected leave under CFRA/FMLA.
Henry Avila worked for a subsidiary of Continental Airlines when he suffered from an attack of pancreatitis and was hospitalized for several days. Upon [...]
Kosher Employment
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 12th, 2008This article makes me really proud of the religion in which I was raised. Amidst the allegations of employee abuses in an Iowa Kosher slaughterhouse, a number of religious leaders are stepping up and implementing “hekhsher tzedek” (or certificate of righteousness) standards>
From CNN:
The “hekhsher tzedek” would be awarded to companies that pay fair [...]
Sick Leave Mandate Dies in Senate
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 8th, 2008I wrote about this the other day. Evidently it died today in Senate.
From CalChamber:
Strong opposition from the California Chamber of Commerce and businesses up and down the state has stopped legislation that un-reasonably expands an employer’s costs and liability by mandating a specific paid sick leave policy.
Held in the Senate Appropriations Committee Suspense File [...]
Non-Competes and Section 16600
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 7th, 2008In a unanimous vote, the State Supreme Court said today that an employer cannot limit an employee from going to work for a competitor or from contacting clients of the former company.
In the case of Edwards v. Arthur Anderson, Raymond Edwards III was a tax consultant in the Los Angeles group of Arthur Anderen.
From Morrison [...]
Former Employee Sues Apple for Wage/Hour
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 6th, 2008Interesting. Another tip from Valleywag. It seems that a former employee is suing Apple for violating California wage and hour laws.
David Walsh claims that Apple, rather than paying overtime, slotted employees into exempt positions.
From Macworld [via Valleywag]:
Walsh claims that Apple has created several job levels so they can make them exempt [...]
Bad Week for the Governor
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 6th, 2008Poor Arnold. Everyone is out to sue him this week. First off, the SEIU Local 1000 wants to sue because, they claim, that Arnold didn’t pay exiting workers on their last day of work.
The California Labor Code specifically states that if an employer initiates the termination of employment, the employee must [...]
New California Sick Leave Mandate
Posted by Lori Dorn on August 1st, 2008A new sick leave bill for California, AB 2716, which has already passed the Assembly is on its way to the Senate Appropriations Committee next week. This bill is remarkably similar to San Francisco’s Health Care Initiative.
From SFGate:
Like the San Francisco law it’s modeled on, AB2716 would require employers to provide one hour [...]
